Compliance Information

Inexpensive efforts to improve compliance with CPAP can be effective, especially when applied at the start of CPAP treatment.

—Chervin, Theut, Bassetti, Aldrich. SLEEP 1997, 20(4):284-289.

Facts

  • Actual CPAP use falls far short of therapeutic goals of quality sleep all night, every night.
  • Efforts to improve CPAP use are needed early in treatment.
  • Consistent users and inconsistent users can be identified within the first week of treatment.
  • Education and support either through phone calls or written information may positively affect CPAP compliance.
  • Approximately 50% of individuals that decide to discontinue CPAP therapy may become consistent users if placed on bi-level therapy.
  • Regular follow-up and education are important factors in long-term compliance.
