Consequences of Undiagnosed or Untreated OSA

The data also suggests that undiagnosed or untreated apnea may have severe financial consequences on the health care system in addition to known adverse effects on physiology.

—Kryger, Roos, Delaive, Walld, Horrocks. SLEEP. 1996 19(9):S111-116.

Facts

  • Undiagnosed or untreated sleep apnea patients are heavy consumers of health care services.
  • With treatment, physician claims and hospital stays are significantly reduced.
  • The occurrence of all types of accidents including automobile, home and on-the-job, may be reduced with the use of CPAP for patients with Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB).
  • Morbidity, mortality and property damage from motor vehicle accidents are likely to be an important part of the total cost of untreated SDB.
